Hanging Out With The Bride, Groom, And Best Man

A room full of brides and grooms all gathered to have a dinner tasting of the place that will be making the food at their wedding. Along with the best man to my friends (bride and groom Bran and Dan), I got invited.

Best Man, Vince.

For me, it turned out more of a night of roasting the groom. Teasingly of course. Dan is too easy to poke fun at. We had our many laughs and jokes, but then we got down to business to some serious wedding planning talk.

Brock House is beautiful. The food was good. It's going to be one gorgeous... and eclectic wedding. I mean that in a good way! Just have to wait and see!

Colours

After Mother's Day brunch, we took a stroll around Coal Harbour. I stopped and took this picture. The pop of colour from the two houses amidst the generally achromatic boats and background of buildings caught my eye.

East Is East

Today, Bran and I went to look for fabric to make our bridesmaid dresses. In a massive store like Fabricana, it can be overwhelming. Just fabric types alone, there were a gazillion, let alone choosing a colour. I believe we decided on a stiffer type of silk called Dupioni. My previous bridesmaids dresses were all made with Dupioni... so I'm familiar.

When we found the first batch of Dupioni, we found only one shade of the colour we're looking for. Good! Less choices, less decisions to make, less fuss. We were pretty quick in our decision and happy that we've found something that we're satisfied with.... until a Fabricana staff points us to the second batch of Dupioni.

In the second batch, there were three more choices of the same colour. All just a notch different from the next. It's like choosing a colour purple... it wasn't just pastel purple, burgundy purple and eggplant purple. It would four different shades of just eggplant purple. (Not mentioning the actual colour we're looking for incase the bride wants to keep it a secret from some). Oh boy! Do we want a black purple?  A grey purple? A purple eggplant purple? Or a burnt eggplant purple? Seriously... they were all very similar. And I guess you could go eeny-meeny-miney-mo. But... we're girls. I'm just glad I'm not the bride. I'm not making the decision. Hehe.

It was a cool day. We warmed up our tummies with a Marco Polo Latte (tea).  While we sat there chatting about wedding details, it started to drizzle outside.

We bummed around one of my favorite places, Granville Island. Chatted up with the Nut Guy. And bought some goodies from Terra Breads. I unexpectedly bought more supplies to my cardmaking collection. Sigh. It's like a switch inside of me that I cannot turn off. At least it was on sale.

We went back to Bran's place to watch the last little part of the hockey game. I'm starting to believe that if I don't care so much about the playoff games and only watch bits and pieces here and there, they will win. That's right. Mm-hmm.

Bran and Dan brought back some Japanese goodies from Japan... and I got a cute brolly! Don't ask me why I'm calling it a brolly and not an umbrella.

They had Blueberry Cheesecake Kit Kat, Tea flavoured Kit Kat, Tofu Pudding Kit Kat, Wasabi Kit Kat, Soy Sauce Kit Kat, and seven rainbow flavours of Pocky!

Then, off we went for dinner with Shum at East Is East. I've been hearing good things about this place for a while. I loved the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant. It was eclectic,. The shakes were amazing. Mmm mmm mmm. The one I chose had honeydew, lychee, pineapple, cardamom, and ice cream I think. I wanted to try them all. The food was good... but they call it Middle Eastern. I thought it was more typical Indian. But, good nonetheless.

I had felt a little bad that at Shum's birthday celebrations last week, we didn't really do anything to acknowledge her birthday other than that it was herself who organized a dinner with the girls. So, Bran and I bought a mini lemon cake for her and got the waitress to light a sparkler on top.
It was hilarious when Shum was being Shum... she got super excited when she saw the waitress bringing out a birthday cake with a sparkler in it. "OMG, it's someone's birthday!". She busted out the Happy Birthday song. It wasn't until mid- song that she realized that the waitress was walking towards her. Haha.

Her reaction? Priceless.

Love Life

When I walked through the backdoor after a night out with Ming for some mediocre Japanese food and a bad action flick, the first thing my brother said to me was, "Have you been on Vancouver Sun yet?". I naturally asked, "Why?".

"Vancouver Sun, " he repeats, not elaborating any further.

I went on vancouversun.com and there it was.

It's vague but I do remember years and years ago, my brother told me about the blogs he follows. I don't remember much about them other than that there are blogs that he follows. But I still remember that one night when he had said to me, "You know this blog that I follow? The guy has cancer."

That's all he said. My brother is, I would say, a man of few words. Don't get me wrong, he has a lot to say. A lot. And more often than not, very interesting things. But he will carry his stories and tidbits and facts, with the fewest words possible to convey them. Sometimes, he'll ramble too, because the story is that interesting to require that many words.

But that night, that's all he said.

And then, from then till today, he'd give me random updates with just as many words. "It's getting worse."

"What is?".

"You know that blog that I read? The cancer is getting worse." And that would be all.

It could have been months ago or years ago that he said to me, "He's dying."

He has gone on to tell me how he's been coping. How hard it is for him to get out of bed. How many times he throws up in a day. He blogged about it all and my brother read it.

It was just this past Saturday when he told me in the car, "He's house-bound now. He loves Diet Cherry Coke and has asked whoever's going down South to bring back some for him." I asked him if he wanted to do the same because we could definitely do the same, but I learned that Coke had already sent him a good supply of it along with a care package.

I know that deep down, through reading his blog through all these years, my brother cared.  And him telling me only small tidbits of what he reads, I inevitably also cared.

Today was the same. In the fewest words. I learned that he has passed away. And with a click on the link that Vancouver Sun provided, I began to read Derek Miller's blog for the first time.

I did start from the last post. And reading about his treatments and punishments from cancer was hard. But at the same time, his posts always left me with a sense of... hope. Not hope for a longer life. Or that he would somehow make it through and come out of it alive. But hope in that one would understand that inevitably, we cannot control a lot of things in life... but you still have to enjoy and appreciate all the good things.

He wrote and I quote :

"
I've also been lucky. I've never had to wonder where my next meal will come from. I've never feared that a foreign army will come in the night with machetes or machine guns to kill or injure my family. I've never had to run for my life (something I could never do now anyway). Sadly, these are things some people have to do every day right now. "

So, to hope.

Hope that we all will remember how very lucky we are. No matter the circumstances. I think that is truly the way to stay happy. :)

On a lighter note...

I don't understand why my brother keeps telling me to stop writing essays. My posts are way too long, he says. But some of Derek Miller's posts are longer!

Bro : I know you read this and I know you'd hate that I write about you on my blog. But hey, you said I've so far somehow made you seem like a prick (I still don't see how I have!) but I don't think this post is so bad, is it? ;)   ).

Fruit A Plenty

Fruits are becoming more readily available. Fruits of all different kinds. MMmmm..

I like to cut them all up, sit back and relax, and enjoy eating them out of a bowl.

By the way, have you tried a grapefruit orange? Must be some mutating fruit. We bought a few from T&T, and boy, are they good!
